The National Educational Testing Bureau of the University Grants Commission (UGC) administers the National Eligibility Test (NET) to determine lectureship eligibility and to award Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) to Indian nationals to ensure minimum standards for new entrants into the teaching and research professions. The test is administered in Humanities (including languages), Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Science and Applications, and Electronic Science.

The UGC-CSIR NET for various Science disciplines, such as Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Earth Atmospheric Ocean & Planetary Sciences, is jointly conducted by the CSIR and the UGC. JRFs are only offered to candidates who specifically request them in their application forms. 

UGC Eligibility Criteria

Following are the conditions or criteria which a student has to meet before applying for the exam.


The candidate must be an Indian and should be of age not more than 28 years (for JRF). There is no fixed maximum age limit for the post of Assistant Professor.


Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks in Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognized by UGC in Humanities (including languages) and Social Science, Computer Science &Applications, Electronic Science etc. are eligible for this UGC NET.

However, candidates belonging to categories other than a general who has secured minimum 50% are eligible for the UGC NET exam.


Also, students who have not yet completed the Masters or are appearing for the final year examination can also apply for the UGC NET exam.

UGC Exam Syllabus

UGC NET exam consists of 3 Papers (I, II, III). The syllabus for UGC paper I is same for all the subjects comprising topics like Reasoning, Analytical Skills, Basic Computer Science, Environment, General Knowledge, Teaching and Research Aptitude, Statistics, etc. However, UGC paper II and paper III have their own set of syllabus according to the choice of subject opted for the exam by the candidate. UGC Exam Pattern

UGC NET exam consists of three papers. All the three papers consist of only objective type questions.

Paper-I is of general nature that evaluates teaching/research aptitude of the candidate. It is designed to test reasoning ability, comprehension and general awareness of the candidate. 60 multiple choice questions of two marks each are given, out of which the candidate is required to answer any 50.   

Paper-II consists of 50 questions that carry 2 marks each.

Paper-III consists of 75 questions that carry 2 marks each. All the questions of UGC paper II and paper III are compulsory.

UGC Exam Schedule

UGC NET Exam is conducted twice every year. First in the month of June and then again in December (usually in the last two weeks of the month). UGC exam is conducted at a large scale in many Government institutions all over the country.

The UGC NET is the first and most basic step towards a career as a teacher in higher education. Candidates aiming to the position of Lecturer or Professor at a college or university must meet the requirement of passing the UGC NET, as per Government of India regulations. Furthermore, UGC provides scholarships of Rs. 25,000 a month (for 5 years) to qualified students pursuing Ph.D. degrees in their respective subjects to foster research, making it a lucrative career option.
