The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is a premier national R&D organization and contributes to the development of science and technology. It conducts an all India test known as the National Eligibility Test or NET for granting various grants and fellowships to students.

What is CSIR-NET?

This exam is conducted biannually to churn out the best talent across the nation who can serve the students with their brilliance by becoming future researchers as well as lecturers. This exam helps the student attain a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) or Lectureship (LS).

CSIR-NET eligibility

Students who have attained or pursuing a master’s degree in the science stream are eligible to sit for the exam. Those who wish to apply for JRF (NET) should not be older than 28 years. However, this age limit is relaxed for those belonging to the reserved category.

However, those applying for Lectureship (NET) need not worry about the age limit since there isn’t any.

CSIR-NET syllabus

There are six papers in all that needs to be cleared. There are


General Aptitude
the topics included are logical reasoning, graphical analysis, quantitative comparisons, series formation, analytical and numerical ability, puzzles, etc.
Life Sciences
the topics involved are molecules and their interaction, cellular organization, cell communication and cell signaling, system physiology or plants and animals, fundamental processes, inheritance biology, diversity of life forms, evolution and behavior, ecological principles, methods in biology and applied biology.
Chemical Science
it is divided into 4 sub-topics namely inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry and interdisciplinary topics.
Mathematical Science
the topics include linear algebra, ordinary and partial differential equation, real analysis, complex analysis and modern algebra.
Earth sciences
it involves topics such as geophysics, meteorology, geology, physical geography, ocean sciences, etc.
Physical Science
topics such as mathematical physics, electromagnetic theory, classic mechanics, electronics, etc are included under this subject.

CSIR-NET career prospects

Candidates who clear the exam usually opt for a Ph.D. programme to add to their education. Otherwise, many opt for a Research Fellowship position. Those who apply for the JRF are awarded a monthly stipend to carry out their research work. The amount is subject to a notification released by the Government of India.

If you have an entrepreneurial bent of mind, you can also open a research lab of your own by applying for and getting due permission from the government.
