On May 28, 2023, the UPSC CSE preliminary test will be held. There will be two mandatory papers in the exam, each worth 200 points. Both of the question papers will consist of objective multiple-choice questions and have a two-hour time limit. The minimum passing score for the General Studies Paper-II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be 33%.

Exam Plan

Two stages will make up the UPSC Civil Services Examination: (i) the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination (Objective type), which will be used to select candidates for the Main Examination; and (ii) the Civil Services (Main) Examination (Written and Interview), which will be used to select candidates for the various Services and posts.

The CSE is modeled by imperial civil service exams from the British era as well as those administered by former Indian empires like the Mauryan Empire and the Mughal Empire. Every year, between 900,000 and 1,000,000 people apply on average, and roughly 550,000 candidates take the preliminary exam.
